El turismo rural y sus encadenamientos hacia los proveedores de insumos y servicios ha surgido en varios foros como propuesta para diversificar la economía rural y crear empleos e ingresos adicionales. En efecto, las experiencias de turismo rural y agroturismo en Chile han tenido, por lo general, un efecto positivo en los ingresos de las personas que ofrecen sus servicios (alojamiento, merienda, venta de artesanías, música y presentaciones folclóricas, transporte, guía, etc.).Sin lugar a dudas, la actividad tiene un futuro prometedor porque existe un creciente interés de la población urbana a reencontrarse con la naturaleza, la vida rural y las faenas agropecuarias. Sin embargo, muchos lugares potencialmente atractivos están aislados de los circuitos turísticos más visitados, padecen de deficiente infraestructura (caminos, telecomunicaciones, servicios de salud, agua potable) y de servicios turísticos conexos insuficientes (restaurantes, hospedajes, serviciosigiénicos, servicios bancarios, señalización). Así mismo, la población local, con mucho esfuerzo pero pocos conocimientos, no logra aprovechar todo el potencial que tiene a la mano, o peor aún, lo echa a perder. El documento tiene un propósito descriptivo y didáctico y está orientado a los distintos profesionales que, sin muchos conocimientos del tema, están llamados a ayudar en la iniciación de actividades de desarrollo de turismo rural y agroturismo. También está orientado a las familias rurales mismas. Después de revisar varias de las acepciones de los términos turismo rural, agroturismo, etnoturismo, ecoturismo, etc., el documento señala órdenes de magnitud del sector turístico chileno y de sus actividades conexos. En base a visitas en terreno, vivencias y entrevistas, los autores llegan a conclusiones que, se espera, serán de ayuda para todos los involucrados en el desarrollo del agroturismo y turismo rural. El presente documento es un manual para guías, cuyo objetivo es poner a disposición de guías y operadores de turismo material de contenidos para la puesta en valor de las iglesias patrimoniales de Chiloé. Este manual se enmarca dentro del proyecto desarrollado por Sernatur y la Fundación Amigos de las Iglesias de Chiloé, Plan de Interpretación Patrimonial Iglesias de Chiloé, el cual busca por una parte relevar los atributos patrimoniales de estos templos y con ello concientizar sobre su cuidado y al mismo tiempo mejorar la experiencia de quienes visitan estas iglesias.
El manual se estructura en torno a tres capítulos. El primero corresponde a una introducción general sobre el valor patrimonial de las Iglesias. Acá se identifican y describen cuatro ejes temáticos principales que caracterizan a estas Iglesias. El segundo capítulo, describe por cada una de las 16 iglesias patrimoniales sus principales atributos y características. Para cada Iglesia se agrega además una idea fuerza que puede ser transmitida como una de las condiciones destacadas de ese templo. Por último el tercer capítulo describe la principal bibliografía disponible de las Iglesias de Chiloé.

La fuerte y tradicional religiosidad de Chiloé, además de plasmarse en tradiciones y creencias, se manifestó en la construcción de singulares templos de madera, una expresión material tan peculiar que ha recibido un nombre propio: la Escuela Chilota de Arquitectura Religiosa en Madera.
Un extenso conjunto de setenta iglesias distribuidas por estos territorios, todas construidas en madera nativa y algunas de las cuales datan del siglo XVIII, dan cuenta de esta expresión, que excede con mucho lo constructivo. Ella se encarna también en imágenes de santos, altares, muebles y otros objetos elaborados por carpinteros locales, como también en el tratamiento pictórico de sus espacios interiores.
En el año 2000 la Unesco reconoció llevando a la categoría de Patrimonio de la Humanidad a 14 de estos templos Chilotes. Más tarde, en el año 2001, recibieron la misma denominación los templos de Caguach y Chelín. A través de esta guía, te invitamos a recorrerlas, conociendo aquello que constituye su extraordinario valor.
