Estudios de folklore y lingüística -de la provincia de Chiloé- (República de Chile) acompañados de un vocabulario de chilotismos y precedidos de una breve Reseña Histórica del Archipiélago.
Publicada originalmente en 1914, destaca en su época por la cantidad de antecedentes aportados para comprender la particularidad lingüística e identitaria de Chiloé. Su autor, sacerdote ancuditano, desarrolló un repertorio de estudio que abarcó aspectos como costumbres ligadas a la economía cotidiana de los isleños, las ceremonias religiosas y características de la cosmogonía y medicina local. Gran parte del documento está dedicado al estudio lingüístico de Chiloé, incluyendo un diccionario con vocablos locales y sus respectivos significados.

Este libro está estructurado como un diccionario, en el que se ordenan por orden alfabético los términos usados en Chiloé relativos a la mitología. Tiene una introducción en donde se habla del valor de los mitos en general:
En las comunidades rurales, donde vive la mayoría de la población, la gente sigue hablando y creyendo, en alguna medida, en la fauna mítica y en sus historias. Los mitos chilotes acarrean miedo. Los relatos o casos de brujos son los más frecuentes de escuchar.
Introducirse hoy al mito es vagar por terrenos confusos, desvinculados, muchas veces in-coherentes, al no estar presente la matriz que los contenía originalmente. Hoy podemos observar el mito como arqueólogos o argonautas, en un cosmos donde éste aparece desintegrado, erosionado y adherido fragmentariamente a una realidad, dentro de otras culturas y otros tiempos.

Este diccionario refleja la constante preocupación de Nicasio Tangol por dar a conocer la cultura chilota. Basado en una investigación de campo, el autor se dio a la tarea de recopilar y sistematizar las voces isleñas desde 1956, pudiendo ser publicado en 1976. Esta obra fue galardonada con el primer premio de ensayo en el Concurso Pedro de Oña (1967) y el segundo premio de ensayo en el Concurso Gabriela Mistral (1967). Contiene alrededor de mil quinientos vocablos con su respectiva etimología. En capítulos aparte destaca la toponimia y el mundo mítico de la isla.
Nicasio Tangol es un escritor chilote nacido en Añihué (Quemchi) el año 1906 y fallecido en 1980.

Durante el año 1880, en plena expansión territorial del estado chileno tanto por el norte (Guerra del Pacífico) como por el sur (Ocupación de la Araucanía), ocurrió un hecho de gran relevancia histórica, pero cuya repercusión inmediata pareció no ser mayor (mas allá tal vez de lo exótico): la detención y procesamiento de un importante grupo de chilotes, que bajo el nombre de Recta Provincia, La Mayoría, o simplemente como “los brujos de Chiloé”, fueron acusados de homicidios por envenenamiento y asociación ilícita. Perseguidos por el intendente de entonces, Luis Martiniano Rodríguez, a raíz de una serie de envenenamientos y homicidios, además de tomar constancia de que una asociación haya operado a espaldas de las autoridades y, que además, ésta representaba un sistema de pensamiento totalmente ajeno a las ideas de la modernidad.
