Los residuos domiciliarios y asimilables a urbanos de la comuna de Castro, se disponen desde el año 1994 en un vertedero no acreditado por la Autoridad Sanitaria, el cual se encuentra emplazado en un sitio de propiedad del municipio, ubicado en el camino a Piruquina a unos 6 km. desde la ciudad de Castro.
La operación del vertedero se ha desarrollado hasta la fecha por el método de área, la conformación en junio 2008, es la de un vertedero a cielo abierto incontrolado. No se cuenta con un manejo de las superficies, desvío de las aguas lluvias, control de las emisiones de biogás, control de los flujos de lixiviados y un programa de avance.
Se requiere la realización de un Plan de cierre del Vertedero Municipal de Castro, para efectuar un manejo adecuado de los residuos depositados en éste.
